Arctic Monkeys are a British Indie band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner on lead vocals and guitar, Jamie Cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums and backing vocals and Nick O'Malley on bass guitar and backing vocals, who replaced Andy Nicholson.

Arctic Monkeys achieved chart success with their first single, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", which reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart.^[1] Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in January 2006, became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, surpassing Oasis' Definitely Maybe. It remains the fastest-selling debut album for a group. It received critical acclaim, winning both the 2006 Mercury Prize^[2] and the 2007 BRIT Award for Best British Album. The band's second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, was released on 23 April 2007, sold over 225,000 copies in its debut week, and was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize.^[3] The group also picked up the award for Best British Album and Best British Group at the BRIT Awards in 2008.

Arctic Monkeys achieved their success through fan-made demo tapes and online file sharing.^[4]Internet, with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed.^[5] The band eventually signed to the independent record label Domino Records. Oasis are an English rock band that formed in Manchester in 1991. The group was formed by Liam Gallagher (vocals), Paul Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan (bass) and Tony McCarroll (drums), who were soon joined by Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher (guitar and vocals). Oasis have sold more than 50 million records worldwide,^[1] have had eight UK number-one singles and have collected 15 NME Awards, 5 Brit Awards and 9 Q awards. The Gallagher brothers are the band's leading songwriters and the only continual members. The present lineup is completed by guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell, as well as unofficial drummer Chris Sharrock .

The band initially gained prominence performing on the Manchester club circuit. They were signed to independent record label Creation Records and afterwards released their debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994. The following year, the band recorded (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with their new drummer Alan White, whilst rivaling with Britpop peers Blur in the charts. The Gallagher brothers were featured regularly in tabloid newspapers for their sibling rivalry and wild lifestyles, cultivating reputations both as bad boys and as a band of the people. At the height of their fame, Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now (1997). It became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history, but lost much of its long-term appeal after the initial hype and positive reception tempered. The band suffered a notable decline in popularity in America and lost two long-time members Paul McGuigan and Paul Arthurs between recording and releasing Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000) and Heathen Chemistry (2002).

Their sixth album Don't Believe the Truth with Zak Starkey (2005), despite turbulent recording, became their best-selling and best-received album in a decade. The following year, the band released a compilation album entitled Stop the Clocks. In February 2007, Oasis received the BRIT Award for outstanding contribution to music. Dig Out Your Soul, the seventh studio album by the band, was released on 6 October 2008, with the lead single from that album, "The Shock of the Lightning", which was released on 29 September 2008. Britpop and techno

Two genres that remained mostly underground throughout the 80s burst into the mainstream around the middle of the decade. Britpop was a fusion of all the alternative rock stylings of the previous two decades, with a special focus on neo-psychedelia and it began to dominate the charts. In late 80s/early 90s, American acid-house and Detroit techno music made it to the UK.[citation needed] In the early 21st century, the British pop scene revealed a number of pop groups to have combined both the stylings of Britpop along with synthetic qualities of British experimental electronic music. The 2000s also saw the emergence of grime, a unique type of garage/hiphop also influenced by drum and bass and other genres, from the garage scene in urban areas of London. "Indie rock" has become very popular in recent years, but there is no overall dominant genre of music, with young people listening to a wide range of styles. Portland - the new indie rock Mecca

Author: Andrew Regan Article: If there's any alluring indie mystique to Portland, it's most likely due to late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, who attended high school on the west side of town and recorded his most-loved work there. Before Smith, Portland's primary musical contribution to the universe was the Kingsmen, and their worldwide party anthem, "Louie Louie". But Smith sketched a virtual map of the city with his whispery voice, and even went so far as to adopt a local street name, Elliott Street, as his first name (legend has it he considered his birth name of Steven as "too jock-y"). To his fans, Smith's music made Portland seem infinitely more romantic than it ever could be in real life. After Smith came the deluge, as swarms of indie rockers descended upon the town. In the late '90s, politically charged riot-girls Sleater-Kinney arrived from punk rock hot-bed Olympia, Washington. They brought Stephen Malkmus and his genre-defining college-rock collective, Pavement, who were all from Stockton, California, along with them. The two bands began hanging out a lot at the Beulahland bar in the North West part of town, and in the process, turned Beulahland into one of the hippest hang-outs in all of Portland. Other indie rock alumni who call Portland their home are husband and wife duo Anita and Kevin Robison, aka Viva Voce, who relocated from Alabama, and indie-folk songstress Laura Veirs, who inbetween recording sessions and touring, gives guitar lessons to kids from her home in the centre of the town. Even the British indie music scene is represented in Portland, with both former Smiths guitar legend Johnny Marr (now a full-time member of Modest Mouse), and Chris Jarman of Leeds indie charmers The Cribs, recently moving to the town. This trend of artists moving to Portland after already having gained some level of fame might explain why few people are even aware of Portland's incredible concentration of musical talent. Virtually none of these groups can really be considered "Portland bands", since none are natives. There are a few exceptions - hugely popular indie rock group Modest Mouse originate from the town, as do alternative pop group The Shins (whose singer and keyboardist Brett Mercer lives in Elliott Smith's former home). Playing Bass Guitar Solos

In 1965 British rock group, The Who released a song called My
Generation. Apart from its claim to fame as a rock anthem it
also contains the most instantly recognizable bass guitar solo
in rock and roll. This iconic solo by John Entwistle is typical
of the bass solo modeled on similar solo breaks played on double
bass and bass guitar in jazz music. This type of bass guitar
solo is in the form of a question and answer sequence often
found in blues music. The Who's solo also imitates jazz bass
solos in that it is played without other instruments behind it.
In jazz such solos are played unaccompanied because other
instruments tend to drown out the bass.
There have been many bass solos included in rock, funk and jazz
but only in pop music has the bass guitar solo stood alone as a
piece of music. The first pop musician in England to own and
play an electric bass guitar was Jet Harris. He found fame and
fortune with The Shadows, Cliff Richard's backing group who were
trying to make their own way in pop music as a vocal and
instrumental group. Harris played on the band's early
instrumental hits featuring the lead guitar of Hank Marvin but
decided to try to make it as a soloist like America's Duane
Eddy.
Jet Harris' first big hit as a solo guitarist was in 1962 with
his rendition of the 1940 song Besame Mucho. The throbbing notes
of the six string bass turned a poignant love song into an
instrumental work full of menace. Probably inspired by their
former band member's success, The Shadows released another six
string bass solo called Stingray as a single in 1965.
Meanwhile in America in 1963 a young composer and arranger named
Jack Nitzsche made a lush orchestral single called The Lonely
Surfer. The orchestra was merely the backdrop for a simple
melody played on the bass guitar. The Lonely Surfer never
climbed higher than number thirty-nine on the charts, but that
is pretty good for a bass guitar solo!
These days the bass guitar is an important part of any band. It
was actually born in the nineteen thirties but met with very
little success until it was adopted by the early rock and roll
groups of the nineteen fifties. The bass guitar is of course
descended from the double bass which has always been a solo
instrument in orchestral music and was often used for solo work
in jazz.
If you want to play bass guitar, you might want to consider
learning to play a regular guitar first. It is not absolutely
necessary to become a lead or rhythm guitarist before playing
bass but it seems to be the way that bass guitar players come
into the world. To begin your career as a bass guitarist you can
try playing through the bass tabs available on the internet.
There are also some lessons available for free plus you can view
heaps of bass solos and bass guitar lessons on the various video
sites.
Once you have some practice on the bass guitar under your belt
there is blinding variety of bass guitar techniques to try
before you begin seriously to play solos. You can employ a wide
range of plectrums or choose from the many techniques which
involve plucking, popping and slapping the bass with the
fingers. To some people this might sound like hard work but
hopefully you will regard it as a labor of love.

Take a walk through Kensington in London and you may stay there

Whether it is a short or long break away, sightseeing of
historical attractions or perhaps even just a general passing
through point on your travels elsewhere, London provides a great
opportunity to explore a diverse and interesting part of the UK.
It is difficult to single out any particular area in London, as
each has its own unique attractions. However, Kensington has
been known to offer its fair share of activities.
The Kensington area does have an impressive list of attractions that
are worth discovering; one of these being the location for the
famous Royal College of London. A popular musical school for the
young, gifted and talented, past students include British
musical composer, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Situated directly opposite the college is the fascinating entertainment
venue of the Royal Albert Hall, which hosts many musical shows
and various productions on a weekly basis and has something to
appeal to everyone. In particular, it has been known to act as a
popular venue for the classical music lovers, and also ballet,
opera, rock and pop music performances.
Take a further
look around Kensington and you will discover it is home to three
popular museums based in the city of London: the Science Museum,
Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Natural History Museum. The
Science museum will suit any individual who has an interest in
space, science and biology to name but a few areas of the
exhibitions on display. The Victoria and Albert museum displays
exhibitions in decorative arts which originate from all over the
world, whilst the Natural History Museum displays exhibitions on
the discoveries of the natural world. These are three very
different yet highly intriguing museums in their own right and
cover enough interests to please all visitors to the area.
However, it doesn't have to be all about museums and
galleries when visiting Kensington. There is the option of
relaxing in the beautiful Kensington Gardens, which has its own
unique history and were originally purchased by William III in
1689. This would later provide the location on which Sir
Christopher Wren would design the attractive Kensington Palace
to be built on.
There are perhaps too many activities
to mention when visiting London and the duration of your visit
may come down to the amount of time you have available to
achieve what you may set out to: you may find yourself staying
longer than first planned!
Should there be a need to
further explore what the city has to offer, finding
accommodation in London hotels needn't be very difficult either
and allows for more time to visit various attractions. Also, not
least forgetting allowing time to visit the shops!
With many restaurants, pubs and entertainment to choose from as well

how much you can treat yourself. There are opportunities for

Traditional music is an extremely broad concept, as there is much variety between the different regions of England. Music of Northern Ireland
Of all the regions of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland (and its neighbour, the Republic of Ireland) has the most vibrant folk traditions. The popularity of traditional instruments such as fiddles has remained throughout the centuries even as analogues on Great Britain died out. Among Irish musicians influenced by the folk tradition is Van Morrison.

Music of Scotland
Scottish folk music includes many kinds of songs, including ballads and laments, sung by a single singer with accompaniment by bagpipes, fiddles or harps. Traditional dances include waltzes, reels, strathspeys and jigs. Alongside the other areas of the United Kingdom, Scotland underwent a roots revival in the 1960s. Cathy-Ann McPhee and Jeannie Robertson were the heroes of this revival, which inspired some revolutions in band formats by groups like The Clutha, The Whistlebinkies, Boys of the Lough, Incredible String Band and The Chieftains.

Music of Wales
Wales is a Celtic country that features folk music played at twmpathau (communal dances) and gwyl werin (music festivals). Having long been subordinate to English culture, Welsh musicians in the late 20th century had to reconstruct traditional music when a roots revival began. This revival began in the late 1970s and achieved some mainstream success in the UK in the 80s with performers like Robin Huw Bowen, Moniars and Gwerinos.
